If there’s anything that has ever worked on my hair, it’s definitely the Aloe Vera plant with it’s wide range of vitamins and proteins. I’ve seen it thicken and elongate my once dry coils, thus proving to be the missing ingredient in my natural hair regimen. Aloe Vera is a succulent plant, which means that it stores water in it’s leaves and as a result it has been found to contain about 90% of water. Now just imagine nourishing your locks with vitamins, proteins, as well as water with just one unique plant. If you’re still not feeling convinced by the plant’s gooey goodness, please read on. You’ll be sure to change your mind.
1. Thicker & longer hair

We all either want long hair or healthy thick hair or both and the evergreen provides all of that. Aloe Vera contains an enzyme called protease that enhances cellular regeneration which promotes new hair growth and reduces hair loss. It also strengthens and restores damaged hair and has been clinically proven to improve your hair’s elasticity allowing your hair to stretch about 40% to 50% more.
2. Promotes healthy scalp
Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce scalp irritation from all those ever too tight braids and pony-tails. It also relieves your scalp of the dryness and dandruff that a lot of us could really take a break from. It increase blood circulation, allowing nutrients to flow to to the scalp to further promote hair growth. Aloe Vera gel also removes dead skin cells that impede follicles in the scalp from generating new hair.
Moisturizes & Hydrates
It hydrates your hair, provides moisture and locks it all in so your hair doesn’t have to worry about moisture loss, this is why it’s highly recommended for dry and brittle hair. All this moisture and hydration reduces frizz, smooths the hair cuticle, promotes softer hair and increases shine. It is also known for it’s ability to draw moisture from the air to your hair and retain it.
Great for detangling

By now we should all know that combing and brushing your hair without a little water or a good conditioning product will only make you cry. So this is where the affordable Aloe Vera gel comes to the rescue. Its super slippery gel allows for a successful detangling session while providing your hair with all the nutrients it needs.

Use Aloe Vera gel on your hair:
- as a pre-poo just before shampooing your hair
- as a deep conditioning treatment
- as a leave in conditioner
- as a moisturizer
- to detangle hair
- add it to your shampoo or conditioner
- boil it in one of your favorite oils (eg: olive oil) and create a scalp or hairline oil
You can cut the plant open, extract the gel and toss it in the blender or you can cut the prickly parts off and toss it in the blender with the green parts. Or you can simply use it straight from the leaf without going through the extracting process. To make things a little bit more interesting, you can add some oils to the gel and even a little water if the gel seems too heavy for you.
What does Aloe Vera contain?
It contains a number of enzymes and fatty acids that help reduce inflammation and promote hair growth. Aloe also contains vitamin C, E and B12 as well as folic acid that aid in strengthening and nourishing one’s hair. It also contains 18 of the 20 amino acids found in our bodies and it’s chemical make-up is similar to that of keratin which is the main protein that our hair is made of.
Side effects
There are very few people who have experienced negative effects after using Aloe on their hair, however just like any product, it is wise to perform a patch test before fully using the plant. Research has found that the plant is cousin to the onion, asparagus, garlic and turnip. So if you’re allergic to any of these, chances are that you may be allergic to the Aloe Vera plant as well. Due to it’s ability to draw moisture from the air, applying it on your hair during times or seasons when the air is dry can result in your hair being dry and brittle so pay attention to the weather and/or room temperature when considering applying aloe gel on your hair or skin.
Although only a few clinical studies of the Aloe plant have been reported, it is quite clear through the large numbers of testimonies online that the plant is indeed a stunner. It’s an all in one that works on all hair types and the best thing is that it is inexpensive and has almost all of the qualities that your hair needs in a best friend.
